Rubber Washers: Why They Are So Important For A Solid Fixing

Rubber washers are extremely important for many different reasons.

As you consider the various ways they can be used and the different applications they can be used in, it’s important to understand exactly what they are.

To understand the basics of a rubber washer, well, they’re made of rubber and is similar to a typical metal washer in that it is flat and round. The most common use is between screws and nuts as they separate the metal parts and work to prevent unnecessary vibrations.

While rubber washers are used in the same type of applications as metal washers, choosing rubber over metal offers many more benefits, such as a tighter, more secure seal with longer life as rubber doesn’t rust like metal can if it comes into contact with moisture, such as in high humidity countries. They also provide silent operation in devices that vibrate a lot.

Why Choosing Rubber Washers Is A Must For Certain Applications

Flexibility – Rubber washers are very flexible, which allows them to create a tight seal. This enables rubber washers to be able to work particularly well in boats and plumbing systems to help prevent leaks and any water ingress.

Other flexible options, such as foam washers can’t compare to rubber washers as they don’t have the same level of durability to adequately do the job and be fit for purpose.

Durability – Rubber washers outdo the competition in many different applications. The reason they are able to do so is that they are not affected by condensation. Condensation makes rubber washers the best choice for applications such as air conditioning units, heaters, ventilation, and plumbing. Rubber washers are also perfect for anything related to water such as swimming pools and boats.

Insulation Properties – Rubber washers nicely insulate delicate applications, including those having to do with temperature and electricity.

Since rubber does not conduct heat and electricity, it works nicely as an insulating material. And since it isn’t abrasive, it doesn’t scratch other materials.

Not All Applications Should Use Rubber Washers

Not every application is conducive to rubber washers, though. For applications that involve high or low temperatures, rubber washers may not be a good fit.

Extreme temperatures, heat or cold, can leave the rubber deformed or even melted that can cause problems. Also, if corrosive liquids have a chance of coming into contact with the washer, rubber is not a good choice as the liquid can destroy the washer.

Rubber washers are a good choice for many different applications, but should be avoided in a few different types of situations.

If your job requires washers that provide a tight seal, durability or proper insulation, choosing rubber washers is a smart move.

However, it is important to give some thought to your choice to ensure you are making a good decision as not every application benefits from washers made out of rubber.
